 Roller Shutter Repair

The Scammell van roller shutter door was having a repaint, on sanding down some rot in one of the slats was found.

The slats are  a complex profile particularly on the inside, making them difficult to make, filling and wood hardener are very short term repair measures, so splicing in a bit of Oak is a better alternative.

Repairs to the cracked roof supports in the Great Western tool van

The design of this van goes back to the flatter roof profile used in 19th Century Carriage construction.

Over 100 years in existence, the roof timbers have dried out leading to structural cracks.

The lower broken pieces were drilled out oversize, glued, and pulled together with long screws, giving back some strength to the roof.

The Ex Studley |Midland Railway Lamp hut

A permanent site has been found for this 100year plus structure at Winchcombe, for use as an oil store by the Carriage and Wagon department of the GWSR

I originally bought it from the owner of Studley Station along with a railway desk which now sits neatly in the James Taylor coal office at Toddington.

The hut was moved to Long Marston, then to Broadway and then on to Winchcombe for a variety of temporary uses.

It now needs a repaint and the plastic windows replaced with glass.

This Fire extinguisher was rescued, given a respray and graphics touched up, now an exhibit in one of the GWR tool vans on the GWSR

10th September a lovely Autumn start with showers later on.

The AA box interior needed a refresh  with Primrose Yellow as it was starting to look tired.

In process the colour change does not show up on the camera inside the box.

The completed job does look a lot better.

The Scammel Scarab has been untouched for a while apart from a wash so with the ultrasonic cleaner still clean after the refill it was time to clean the carburettor float bowl and jets.

                                   Before                                                           After

Filled with fresh petrol and refitted then petrol added to the empty fuel tank it started easily but then took a few squirts of easy start to get the system to prime and fill the carburettor.

The main bench in the workshop had a clean to give us some work space.

The paint on the museum coach is peeling and investigation showed two different reasons, one being the black paint must have reacted with the previous white paint causing the white to lift and go brittle the other areas show the black has not adhered to the galvanised roof.

Scrapers were used on the roof to remove the peeling paint so we have a firm base to start the repainting process to get a smooth black roof again.

all time consuming jobs but we had time to assemble a pillar drill in the line side workshop wagon and check for a way forwards in carriage number two where the roof was painted a few months ago.

Autumn means a regular clean up of fallen leaves from inside the buildings so now safely on the bonfire

The end of another work period

Missed the 27th  so now back on the 3rd September and Autumn has arrived.

A week away and things have moved on, the Austin 2T 5cwt has had the cab welding and bodywork completed and some nice new BR colours painting done and it looks smart. The aim is to get it roadworthy..

The workshop ultrasonic cleaner has been used a lot but neglected so a full empty, clean and refill using an engine and aluminium parts cleaner in the fresh tap water.

the old water mix                                        sediment left after a stir and tipping out

The fresh solution                 After 30 mins at 60C it works

We had a slab come loose on the path alongside the archiving room so a new concrete base was put down a few days ago today was a simple mix some mortar and lay a slab job then paint on the obligatory H&S white line.

After the prolonged dry spell the trees are dropping their leaves earlier so our buildings need a sweep out more often to keep them looking more inviting to our visitors.

A new to us jack needed derusting, freeing off and tidying up as it may be required for some photo shoot or alike planned in the future.

rusty and seized                                 In process wedged under scales to stop it moving.

Free to turn and completed so ready for the camera

Whilst doing the new old jack 2 of our originals needed a bit of work as they had rusted and seized.

Whilst walking up to paint the inside of the AA box a  1950 Leyland double decker from the Transport Museum Wythall arrived on it's inaugural trip out after completion.

The planned AA box interior painting did not happen because of a car parked out front of it, it was intended for classic car photo shoots not modern vehicles.

So back in the shop to do the BAC stamping machine now some 10mm 0.3 mm aluminium roll had arrived, it needed the guide aligning so the automatic feeder loaded the strip into the mechanism.

Once feeding through it was assembly time which was not easy with limited access and large hands but it all went in then it was time to align the characters with the control lever position. The tape is 10mm wide the channel is 1/2" imperial so a bit off set.

another day with jobs ticked off the long To Do list.
